Network Security for IP Cameras: Protect Your Video Streams

IP cameras are network devices — and like any network device, they can be exploited if not properly secured. This guide covers the essential steps to protect your Florida CCTV system from cyber threats.

The Cybersecurity Risk Most CCTV Buyers Don't Consider

IP security cameras are purpose-built network devices with embedded Linux operating systems, web servers, and in many cases, cloud connectivity. When they ship from the factory, many have default credentials, open ports, and minimal firewall configuration. An improperly deployed IP camera isn't just a bad security camera — it's an open door into your business network.

In 2016, the Mirai botnet hijacked hundreds of thousands of IP cameras worldwide — including many in Florida businesses — to conduct massive DDoS attacks. The cameras' owners had no idea their security hardware was being weaponized against third parties. Since then, NIST, CISA, and the FCC have all published guidance specifically addressing IP camera security.

For Florida businesses, a compromised camera system creates liability exposure beyond just the surveillance data breach — it opens your entire internal network to lateral movement by attackers.

Step 1 — Change Default Credentials Immediately

The single highest-impact security action you can take is changing default admin credentials before the camera goes live. Many cameras ship with username admin / password 12345 or the equivalent — credentials that are publicly documented on manufacturer support sites and actively scanned for by botnets.

Requirements for strong camera passwords:

  • Minimum 12 characters
  • Mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  • Unique password per device (not shared across all cameras)
  • Stored in a password manager — not on a sticky note on the NVR

Both Hikvision and Hanwha cameras now enforce strong password setup on first boot, refusing to activate with the default credentials. Older models require manual enforcement during commissioning.

Step 2 — Isolate Cameras on a Dedicated VLAN

Network segmentation is the most structurally sound IP camera security measure. By placing all cameras on a dedicated VLAN (Virtual LAN) isolated from your business network:

  • A compromised camera cannot communicate with your POS systems, file servers, or workstations
  • You can apply granular firewall rules to camera traffic — allow only specific IPs to access the NVR management interface
  • You can log and monitor all camera network traffic separately

The camera VLAN typically only needs internet access for two services: NTP (time synchronization) and the cloud relay service (e.g., Hik-Connect DDNS). All other outbound connections from the camera VLAN should be blocked at the firewall. The NVR needs access from your management workstations only — not from the general office network.

Step 3 — Keep Firmware Updated

Hikvision, Hanwha, and Uniview all publish regular firmware updates that patch known vulnerabilities. In 2021, a critical buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2021-36260) was discovered in Hikvision cameras — affecting over 70 models. Cameras running unpatched firmware remained exploitable months after the patch was released.

Best practice:

  • Check for firmware updates quarterly via the manufacturer's security advisory page
  • Enable automatic firmware notifications in Hik-Connect or equivalent management software
  • For large deployments, use Hikvision's iVMS-4200 or Hanwha SSM to push firmware updates across all devices simultaneously
  • Document firmware versions in a device inventory spreadsheet

Step 4 — Disable Unnecessary Services and Ports

IP cameras typically run several services that may not be needed for your deployment:

  • UPnP: Should be disabled. UPnP can automatically open ports in your router, bypassing your firewall rules.
  • Telnet / FTP / HTTP: Disable in favor of HTTPS/SSH-only access. Unencrypted protocols send credentials in plaintext.
  • ONVIF: If you're not using a third-party VMS, consider disabling ONVIF discovery to reduce the camera's attack surface.
  • Cloud P2P (if not needed): If you use a local NVR for access without cloud relay, disable P2P cloud tunneling on cameras.

Step 5 — Enable HTTPS and Certificate Verification

Access your NVR management interface and camera web interfaces only over HTTPS. Modern Hikvision NVRs support self-signed certificates out of the box, with the option to install trusted CA certificates for enterprise environments. Never access your NVR management interface over HTTP — credentials and session tokens are transmitted in plaintext and can be intercepted on the network.

Step 6 — Use a Reputable Vendor and Check NDAA Status

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Section 889 bans federal agencies from purchasing telecommunications and video surveillance equipment from several Chinese manufacturers. While NDAA compliance is mandatory only for government procurement, it serves as a useful proxy for supply chain security risk in general.
