How to Choose the Right NVR: Channels, Resolution & Storage Guide

A practical guide to selecting the right NVR for your IP camera system — covering channel count, resolution support, PoE ports, and storage capacity.

Choosing the Right NVR for Your IP Camera System

The NVR (Network Video Recorder) is the brain of your IP camera system. Choosing the wrong one means wasted capacity, poor video quality, or a system that cannot grow with your needs. This guide breaks down everything you need to know.

Step 1: Count Your Cameras (Plus Future Growth)

Always buy an NVR with at least 25% more channels than your current camera count. If you have 8 cameras today, buy a 16-channel NVR. Common sizes: 4ch, 8ch, 16ch, 32ch, 64ch.

Step 2: PoE vs Non-PoE NVRs

PoE (Power over Ethernet) NVRs power cameras directly through the network cable — no separate power adapter needed. This simplifies installation dramatically. Non-PoE NVRs require cameras to be powered separately, which adds complexity but allows cameras to be further from the recorder.

Recommendation: For most installations under 300ft per camera run, choose a PoE NVR.

Step 3: Resolution Support

Match the NVR's maximum recording resolution to your cameras. Common resolutions:

  • 2MP (1080p) — Standard surveillance quality, good bandwidth efficiency
  • 4MP/5MP — High detail, popular for retail and commercial
  • 8MP (4K) — Maximum detail, requires more storage and bandwidth
  • 12MP — Ultra-high definition for critical monitoring zones

Ensure your NVR supports the resolution of every camera you plan to connect.

Step 4: Hard Drive Capacity Planning

Use this rule of thumb: 1TB stores approximately 7-10 days of continuous recording from 4 cameras at 1080p/H.265+. For 30-day retention with 8 cameras at 4MP, plan for 4-6TB minimum.

Most NVRs support 1-4 HDD bays. Check the maximum HDD size supported before purchasing.

Step 5: H.265+ Compression

Always choose an NVR that supports H.265+ (not just H.264). H.265+ uses up to 75% less storage than H.264 at the same quality level — this is one of the highest-impact decisions for long-term storage costs.
