Hikvision ColorVu: Full-Color Night Vision Explained
Traditional security cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs to see in the dark, producing black-and-white footage. Hikvision's ColorVu technology changes that — using a large aperture lens and supplemental white-light LEDs to capture full-color video even in near-total darkness.
How ColorVu Works
ColorVu cameras combine three innovations:
- F1.0 aperture lens — captures significantly more light than standard F2.0 lenses
- High-performance image sensor — optimized for low-light sensitivity
- White light LED supplement — activates at night to illuminate the scene in full color
The result is vivid, recognizable color footage at night — critical for identifying clothing colors, vehicle colors, and faces that black-and-white IR footage cannot distinguish.
ColorVu vs Standard IR Night Vision
| Feature | ColorVu | Standard IR |
|---|---|---|
| Night footage color | Full color | Black & white |
| Evidence quality | Higher (color details) | Lower |
| White light activation | Yes (visible glow) | No (invisible IR) |
| Range | Up to 60m | Up to 100m+ |
| Best for | Parking lots, entrances | Perimeters, wide areas |
Best Use Cases in Florida
ColorVu is particularly valuable in Florida due to the state's active nightlife, hotel areas, and high vehicle theft rates. Color footage of a vehicle's color and driver's clothing dramatically increases identification rates for law enforcement.
Recommended deployments: parking structures, retail store entrances, hotel lobbies/exits, gas stations, and residential driveways.
